Australian Camp & Pothana: A-one day hike from Pokhara

Australian Camp is not-so-often heard destination to tourists travelling Pokhara and other trekking destinations connecting Pokhara. If you are a frequent Pokhara guy and have lost the charm for cities of Pokhara, we recommend you a days’ hike to Australian Camp and Pothana.
Australian Camp can be reached from Dhampus, which is though a renowned name as sang in several folklore across Nepal.
Those who don’t have enough time to reach Ghandruk or Poon hill or even Panchase, can find Australian Camp and Pothana trek to be worth it.

Observing mountain regions and ethnic cultures today and work the day after tomorrow at your home is true from Australian Camp and Pothana.
Reaching Australian camp is a walk on the cake. You can catch a local bus going towards Baglung or Beni from Pokhara and drop at Kaande and start hiking. Alternatively, you may also catch a bus to Phedi from Pokhara and take a longer route to Dhampus and then Australian Camp. We recommend you to take the route from Dhampus while going up hill. Also, while returning, we recommend you to take the route from Kaande, which will be shorter and you will complete a small circuit.

A huge numbers of home stays will be welcoming you at Australian Camp and Pothana. A local association of home stay owners over the place has fixed home stay rates, so you can stay assured about getting for what you pay for.

Mount Dhawalagiri, Annapurna, Machchhapuchchhre, Nilgiri, Lamjung Himal, Pokhara Valley and Phewa lake are visible from Australian Camp. If lucky enough, a night view of Pokhara valley will be breath taking. Stargazers, you will love Australian Camp. Australian Camp has low level of light pollution. We have been told that viewing and photographing the milky way is bliss from here.

We were not that lucky to only view glimpses of Himalayan Ranges from Australian Camp. Some of the images are posted below in the gallery.

Australian Camp is a gateway to Mardi Himal Base Camp. You can take a hike of half an hour towards north to reach Pothana. Pothana is a small village, with welcoming people. You can have chilled beer, tea or coffee depending upon your choice. A beautiful and closer view of Mount Dhawalagiri, Annapurna and Machchhapuchchhre can be viewed if the weather favors. So, you won’t regret taking a half an hour hike to Pothana.

We preferred to stay at Australian Camp despite Pothana being a good place. We recommend you to travel between September-January and March- May for better view.


General Information

  1. Australian Camp and Pothana are the nearest yet beautiful destination from the valley of Lakes.
  2. If trek is not your food, you can hire a motorbike or a bicycle to reach Australian Camp too.
  3. If it’s weekend, booking hotel at Australian Camp is recommended. Rs 5-6 thousands would be enough for the entire trip unless being sober is not your priority on the trip.
